VAX- the speculative dust cleaner has 2 rectilinear vacuum heads and a curvilinear handle that acts as the dust collector. My lines are formed by wire, covered in a plastic tubing, which act as the hoses.
Challenge
Create one abstract composition to develop into a product.
The product should have a minimum of three volumes and consist of a dominant volume with a fragment that is removed for some functional purpose. It must also include a plane and a line that act as dynamic elements.
Week 1
We began by creating our first sculptures, creating two rectilinear forms with relativie proportions and clear axes. One form has a fragment removed that impacts the dominant axis.
Week 3
We were tasked with building 5 abstract compositions, each with three volumes, one curve, and one plane. The accented volume should be paired with its fragment and featured in a way that enhances the composition.
The challenge was to have strong directionality, while maintaining a balance of inherent proportions of each element in the composition. The elements should also have a balance and variety of directional forces that enhance three dimensionality.
My challenge was that my compositions lacked clear hierarchy and followed a pattern of similair directionality that made them feel uninspired.
Week 5
Now we are down to a single composition and considering the function of our developed form.
We were tasked to maintain the directionality and relative proportions of our original composition. In this iteration we considered how the human body may engage with our composition.
The composition felt like something to be held at the center, with two forms connected by a subdominant line. The plane seemed to function as a button or lever. I sought to make each form more ergonomic by shaping them to better fit the hand.
Final
To get to our final product we did a series of sketching and mechanical drawings to refine the elements and composition.
I placed more effort into deviating from the original rectilinear forms. I used the sketching as a way to experiment with how I could alter the shapes while maintaining the integrity of the form.
Takeaways
While putting everything together, I can see my growth in these new skills. My forms have clearer axes and directional force, and compared to Week 3 my fragment now reads with much more clarity than it did in earlier weeks.
